You’ve just had your eyelash extensions done, and they look incredible. Fluffy, natural, effortlessly elegant. It doesn’t matter if it’s the first time or you’re a lash regular, stepping out of the salon with fresh lash extensions always feel like that extra bit of magic and pop. However, how long they stay that perfect depends heavily on your eyelash extension aftercare.
At Edy London, Edy doesn’t just specialise in applying natural-looking lash extensions, she’s known for it. With years of experience, celebrity clients, and features in top magazines, she’s built a reputation for creating stunning lashes, but also for helping clients maintain them with great aftercare tips and tricks.
Eyelash extensions aftercare is often overlooked and forgettable. Yet, it’s the main factor in helping your lashes last longer and prevent them from falling flat too soon. So, if you’re wondering how to make the most of your investment, keep reading and don’t worry! We have all the essential steps and top tips to help you protect and prolong your lashes so they stay fine for longer!
The First 24 Hours – Handle With Care
Your first day after getting eyelash extension is the most crucial. The adhesive bond needs time to set properly. Usually, when the adhesive becomes compromised, lash retention also becomes poor. So, try your hardest to not get your lash extensions wet! You should avoid anything that involves moisture, heat, or steam. That means no steamy showers, no gym, no swimming and even no crying (even if you just watched a soppy show). If you get your eyelash extensions wet, the glue will not cure and can lead to your lashes falling out sooner!
If you accidentally get your lashes wet, even just a splash, gently pat around the area with a clean tissue. Ideally, keep your extensions wet free until the next day to give them the best chance of lasting.
Also, it’s important to steer clear of oil-based skincare products near your eyes. The oils can break down the adhesive before it’s fully cured, which means your beautiful lashes won’t last as long as you’d like. Leave it for 24 hours, give your lashes some peace and quiet, and they’ll thank you later.
At Edy London, we always explain this during your appointment, but it’s worth repeating, the better you treat your eyelash extensions in those first few hours, the longer they will continue to look flawless.
Keep Your Mitts Away
It’s tempting to touch your new lash extensions, especially if you’re new to the world of eyelash extensions. But please resist the urge. Tugging, pulling or even fiddling with your lashes can lead to poor retention and cause the extensions to fall out early and may even damage your natural lashes underneath.
Edy applies each lash with precision and care, making sure your natural lashes stay healthy. But if you start picking at them, it can undo that work. So, again, we advise: no rubbing your eyes, no playing with your lashes, and absolutely no pulling.
Wash Those Lashes!
One of the biggest myths we hear is that you shouldn’t wash your eyelash extensions. That’s simply not true. Washing and cleaning your lashes is actually a vital part of proper eyelash extension aftercare.
When you don’t clean your lashes, makeup, natural oils and skin debris can build up along the lash line. That can lead to irritation, blocked follicles, and even infections. In some cases, it can even attract lash mites (and nobody wants that).
Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser designed specifically for lash extensions. Edy is happy to recommend a trusted product that’s kind to your lashes and your eyes. After those first 24 hours, clean them every day or every other day using a soft brush or your fingertips. Rinse with lukewarm or cool water around the eye area and gently pat dry.
It only takes a minute or two, and you’ll notice that your lashes will stay cleaner, healthier, and better looking for longer.
Be Careful with Makeup
You can still wear makeup when you have eyelash extensions, but you need to choose the right kind. The most important thing to avoid? Oil. Oil-based products like mascara, makeup removers, eyeliners or creams can weaken the glue and cause your lashes to shed faster.
If you like wearing eyeliner, choose a water-based or extension-safe formula. If you wear mascara, you honestly don’t need it with your eyelash extensions. Your lashes already look full and defined. But if you do want to wear a bit, only apply it to the tips and make sure it’s designed for use with lash extensions and completely avoid waterproof mascara. Though if you can help it, avoid mascara altogether.
When removing makeup, be gentle. Use a clean cloth or a lint-free pad. Avoid cotton wool as the fibres can snag on your lashes. We advise to always swipe downwards, not side to side, and avoid rubbing.
Sleep Like a Lash Queen
Believe it or not, the way you sleep can affect your eyelash extensions. If you’re someone who sleeps on their side or stomach, you might find one eye loses lashes faster than the other. That’s because your lashes are brushing against your pillow all night which will again affect your lashes.
Try sleeping on your back if you can. A silk pillowcase is a great investment too as it creates less friction, which helps your lashes (and your skin and hair) stay in better condition.
For bonus protection, use a lash-friendly sleep mask. These are specially shaped so they don’t squash your lashes while you snooze.
Brush Them Daily
Just like your hair, your lashes need a little grooming and is essential to eyelash extension aftercare. Brushing your lash extensions daily helps keep them neat, separated and looking fresh. We recommend clients use a clean spoolie brush, like a mascara brush, as it’s your best tool for daily maintenance.
A quick brush in the morning, always in an upward and outward direction, is all you need. It stops lashes from crisscrossing and keeps them in shape. Just be gentle. You’re not combing tangles out of your hair; you’re lightly guiding them back into place.
Furthermore, avoid using eyelash curlers! Curlers can break both your extensions and your natural lashes. At your appointment, Edy will always apply your lash extensions with precision and care so there is absolutely no need for the client to do any extra work. Don’t Skip Your Infills
Even with the best eyelash extension aftercare, your lashes will shed over time, and that’s totally normal! Your natural lashes have a growth cycle, and as old ones fall out, your extensions go with them.
To keep your look full and balanced, we recommend booking a regular infill every 2 to 3 weeks. At Edy London, our infill appointments are tailored to your lash pattern and lifestyle. We always aim to maintain that natural, seamless look, no gaps, no clumps, just beautiful lashes from corner to corner.
The earlier you come in for a top-up, the better. Don’t wait until half your lashes are gone. By then, it’s closer to a full set!
Got a Problem? Let Us Know!
One of the most important things when getting your eyelash extensions is to choose a skilled technician who uses quality products – like Edy! Aftercare becomes infinitely easier when your eyelash extensions are already professionally and well applied! But, if something doesn’t feel quite right, maybe a lash is poking, or your eyes feel irritated, don’t try to fix it yourself. That’s what we’re here for.
Contact us at Edy London, and we’ll happily take a look. Sometimes it’s just a small adjustment. We stand by the quality of our work and want you to be comfortable as well as confident with your lashes.
We never recommend our clients to try removing eyelash extensions at home. Pulling them out can damage your natural lashes, irritate your eyelid, and even lead to bald spots along the lash line. If you ever want them removed or changed, we’ll do it safely and gently.
Let’s Keep Your Lashes Looking Beautiful
Looking after your lashes doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple habits and the right products, you can keep them looking salon-fresh for weeks.

We’re here to support you with expert advice, trusted recommendations, and personalised care every step of the way. Whether you’re a celebrity client or simply someone who loves great lashes, we want you to feel confident and well looked-after.
Great lashes don’t happen by chance, they happen by choice. So make aftercare a priority. Keep them clean, avoid oil based products, brush them regularly, and come back for infills on time. Your lashes will last longer, feel more comfortable, and always look their best.
